Winner of the Character is Destiny Retreat

Lots of winner announcements this week, which is always a great way to spend my time!

Thanks to all the writers who submitted letters from their characters for this competition. I really enjoyed reading them all and there were lots of really strong entries. There were three in particular that I had a hard time choosing between. But, I have now decided and the winner of the free place at the Character is Destiny Retreat is…

Ruby Speechley for her letter to Sylvia. What finally decided me on this one was the strength of the voice, which perfectly combined naivety and a growing cynicism while very subtly giving clues as to a much bigger story. Well done, Ruby! I look forward to finding out more about the story at the retreat.

The other two writers whose letters deserve a mention as they very nearly won the retreat are Helen East for her letter from Tommy to his daughter, Katie; and Anne Hamilton for her letter from Jamie to Alina. Brilliant voices coming through in both of these.

So now Ruby has nabbed a place at the retreat there are just 4 rooms still available to join us. Better snap them up quick! Info on the retreat can be found here.

The next prize up for grabs is a place on the 8 Month Novel Course starting in January 2017, where you get to work with me and 4 other writers to take your idea to a short first draft through a mix of online course with exercises, 1-1 mentoring and editorial feedback. The deadline to enter this competition is 20th November – enter it here.
