Resurrection Trust, Various

A collection of funny, dark, mad, bad, upbeat, downbeat and fantastical short stories about living sustainability from the University of Southampton’s Green Stories writing competition.

From eco communities to singing buildings, and sharing economies to resetting the earth back to prehistoric times, these stories showcase a myriad of different ideas about how humans can live more harmoniously with nature, and each other.

ABOUT THE AUTHORS

The authors were winners of the University of Southampton’s 2018 Green Stories competition, which sought work that would in some way enable, inform or inspire sustainable behaviour.

Featuring 19 stories from the competition and a foreword from Caroline Lucas, MP for Brighton Pavilion and former Co-leader of The Green Party, the anthology also features two additional stories from the Nothing Is As It Was climate-fiction anthology published by Retreat West Books in April 2018 to raise funds for Earth Day Network. Several of the stories from this anthology were used by Dr Denise Baden of the Southampton Business School in her research on what kinds of stories inspire more sustainable behaviour.

Blue Planet by Jane Roberts and I Am Warrior by FE Clark have been chosen to be featured as they are feel-good hopeful stories, which were shown to have the most impact on changing people’s minds about sustainability.

REVIEWS

Most people find it very difficult indeed to imagine what ‘living sustainably’ might really mean – and neither dry facts nor hypothetical scenarios seem to help very much. The Editors of Resurrection Trust have set out to address that challenge through the power of the short story, with as diverse, surprising and hugely enjoyable a collection of entries as one might expect from an open competition of this kind.
