Thanks again to everyone that sent stories in for the June quarterly-themed flash competition. The shortlisted stories all had interesting and very different takes on the green theme, as well as great imagery, memorable characters and lovely writing so it has been a very difficult decision to choose the winner and two runners-up this time around. You can see the shortlist here.
Winner: Summer 1976 by Joanna Campbell
Loved the imagery, especially the cottage loaf stomach, and the vividness of the closing paragraphs both visually and in the self-realisation for the character. Perfectly captures teenage girl relationships.

Runner-up: The Tree of Forty Fruits, Celia Daniels
Beautiful use of language with sensual details that made me see, feel and smell the trees in the orchard. Great last line that added real poignancy.

Runner-up: Green! Means! Go! by Christopher Stanley
Great voice and a real heart-stopping moment when you are not sure what way the story is going to go. I was glad it went the way it did (without giving anything away!).
