Join us for a 6-night tutored writing retreat at Voley Farm in gorgeous Exmoor National Park in North Devon where you’ll have writing workshops, time to write and explore the stunning surroundings, great home-cooked vegetarian food, delicious wine, and also get to make new writing friends.

What will you learn?

There will be five three-hour workshops during the retreat.

Novella-in-Flash

Two workshops will be dedicated to writing the Novella-in-Flash. This exciting new form is fast growing in popularity and the workshops will teach you how to write your own, to play with the form, and find your own unique way to deliver a novella with an overall story arc made up of flash fictions that also stand alone.

Tutor: Michael Loveday

Michael Loveday is a tutor in Adult and Higher Education, and a Director of the National Association of Writers in Education. He was judge of the 2019 Novella-in-Flash Award at Bath Flash Fiction, is also judging the 2020 Award, and has written about the novella-in-flash for Smoke Long Quarterly magazine. His own flash fiction novella Three Men on the Edge (V. Press, 2018) has been shortlisted for the 2019 Saboteur Best Novella Award. His writing has appeared in The Spectator; Flash: the International Short-Short Story Magazine; and Funny Bone: Flashing for Comic Relief and has won, been placed or shortlisted in several writing competitions including winning the Retreat West Flash Fiction Prize in summer 2018.  He has taught flash fiction at Bath Spa University, the Hastings Literary Festival and the UK Flash Fiction Festival, where he will be chairing a panel on the novella-in-flash in 2019.

Flash Collections

Three workshops will be focused on creating work to form the basis of a collection by experimenting with voice and style and writing to themes. You’ll discover new ways to find stories, different ways to approach themes, and how you can make your flash fictions stand out when submitting to publishers and competitions.

Tutor: Amanda Saint

Amanda Saint is a flash fiction writer, publisher and tutor. She regularly teaches at writing retreats and literary festivals, and designed and teaches the popular Fantastic Flashing online course. She has been running and judging flash fiction competitions for several years, and publishes collections of flash fictions through her indie press, Retreat West Books, which is shortlisted for Most Innovative Publisher in the 2019 Saboteur Awards. Amanda’s flash fiction stories have been widely published, won awards and been long and shortlisted in prestigious prizes. She’s the author of two novels, As If I Were A River and Remember Tomorrow, and is working on a flash collection, Flashes of Colour, which will be published in 2020.
